Acupuncture is one part of a whole range of treatments known as Chinese medicine, which includes herbs, massage, cupping, moxibustion, nutrition and exercise to treat the body and spirit.

Acupuncture is one of the most ancient systems of treatment known to mankind, and has been practiced in China and other Eastern countries for thousands of years. The philosophy behind the treatment is that vital energy (Qi pronounced "Chee") flows through energy lines or meridians in the body.

When you are in good health the flow of Qi is smooth and uninterrupted, but when illness strikes this flow is disturbed. Modern living can cause this energy to be disrupted in many ways, including stress, emotional upset, physical trauma, poor diet or overworking.

With an acupuncture treatment, points are carefully chosen by the practitioner in order to disperse any blockages and bring your Qi into a better balance.

Each person is different and the Chinese medicine approach is to treat the patient as an individual and this is at the core of acupuncture, with the treatment very much tailored to the patients needs to allow the body to rebalance itself.

Acupuncture is a painless treatment and the sensation can be likened to a tingling, or a dull aching sensation. After a treatment, patients commonly feel relaxed yet also energised.

Acupuncture is usually combined with other part of Chinese medicine techniques such as Chinese herbs, cupping, moxibustion or Tui-Na massage.
